Airspung Mattress

When a bed manufacturer decides to name a mattress ‘The Sublime’ they clearly believe they’ve developed a great product. And in this case, they’re correct.

Airsprung Beds, who for over 130 years have been one of the UK’s leading bed manufacturers, released the Sublime as part of their 2008/2009 luxury Springmaster collection, along with the Fusion, Atlas and Infinity mattresses.

The sublime uses Airsprung’s Integra continuous spring system to provide even support across the entire sleeping surface. They claim that this is the spring system’s best feature but I disagree. It also offers what the industry terms ‘no roll-off’ and ‘no roll-together’; an ingenious system that stops you falling off the bed or disturbing your partner during the night.

The Airsprung Sublime 1800 mattress is available in a range of sizes including Single, Double and Kingsize. When combined with an Airsprung divan base, storage options include no-drawers, 2 drawers or 4 drawers. The base has a platform top.

The Ortho Sleep from Airsprung comfortably firm range and is a mattress designed for those that like a firmer sleeping surface. The Ortho sleep uses Airsprungs own supercoil plus spring system to give it, its own unique firmness.

Airsprung have developed the Supercoil with a system that offers an extra heavy 12.5 gauge Bonnell spring for extra firmness and support. With Airsprungs unique spring it offers more springs than a conventional open coil system which in turn gives greater support to the user.

The Ortho sleep mattress comes with several layers of upholstery on top of the spring system to give a level of comfort that works in conjunction with the support to give a quality feel of comfort and support.

The sleeping surface has been tufted which helps keep all the fillings in place and can help the mattress last longer. Finished in a Belgium damask fabric this mattress has a contemporary look with a blue and cream striped design.

The Ortho Sleep offers good value for money with an average 4FT6 double costing around £170. In general this mattress is suitable for users wanting a slight upgrade from a normal open coil spring system along with a firm supportive feel.

The Renata Mattress from Airsprung is a simple medium tension mattress from Airsprungs Gently supportive collection. The renata mattress uses an open coil spring system which uses a 13.5 gauge wire to create a continuous spring that runs throughout the mattress.

This type of spring system is used in most entry level mattresses and the gauge of the wire usually determines how firm the mattress will be. A 13.5 gauge wire is classed as soft to medium. Airsprung’s open coil spring system is very hard wearing and expect a mattress using this spring system to  last about 6 – 8 years depending on its use.

The Renata mattress comes with a bright patterned damask cover and has a microquilted finish to give a flat comfortable sleeping surface. The mattress border is rod edged to give the mattress more stability and ultimately a longer life.

Airsprung use a layers of upholstered cusioning on top of the spring system to create a comfortable feel for the user. These layers can include white fibre, cotton and polyester.

The Renata is a good, comfortable budget mattress with lasting appeal, the price of a 4FT 6 Double will be around £100 which witha life expectancy of upto 8 years is a very sensible investment.

A simple mattress with a medium comfort feel and enough support for daily use, perfect for growing children or people on a budget.

The Enigma mattress form Airsprung has proven to be a best seller for a number of years now. this mattress comes from Airsprungs gentley supportive range and offers an open coil spring system, this spring system is a popular choice for the main stream consumer as it offers great value for money while still giving good comfort and support.

The open coil spring used in the Enigma mattress has a gauge rating of 13.5 this refers to the thickness of the wire used to create the spring system. The thinner the wire the softer support the mattress will have. The number rating usually alters between 12.5,13 and 13.5 with the latter been the softest rating.

An open coil spring usually means the wire runs continuously through the mattress to create the coiled spring system and then a thicker rod edge is added to the perimeter to keep the spring system in place.

The Enigma has a good balance of upholstery on top of the spring system to offer a adequate level of comfort and a micro quilted finish to the top of the mattress provides a very good sleeping surface.

The outer cover is made from Belgium damask and uses a modern pattern for its overall design.

The main reason i believe this mattress is such a good seller is its price, On a standard 4FT 6 Double it retails for around £160.00 which is very reasonable for the level of comfort and support you get in this mattress. Airsprung have produced a worthwhile mattress here and certainly a good purchase if you prefer a softer comfort level

The Symphony 1000 is Airsprung’s entry level pocketspring bed from their Gently Supportive range. 1000 pocket springs have been used in the mattresses to create a medium feel bed.

Pocket springs have always been the superior spring system to use in mattresses, the ability to support weight independently on each spring offers huge benefits over more traditional open coil spring systems. With this system each spring can give the correct support to different parts of the body while not effecting its neighboring spring, this system is also perfect for 2 people sleeping together as movement on one side of the bed will not disturb the sleeper on the other side!

The Symphony base has a patterned ivory finish with steel linking bars on the sides making it easy to link the 2 bases together. Drawer options are available with standard 2 and 4 drawer options been the most popular. The base also has the option of platform top or sprung edge. A platform top is a solid top base which will make the mattress have a slightly firmer feel, Sprung edge includes small springs on top of the base which will offer more give to the mattress and make it a slightly softer feel.

The mattress has a tufted sleeping surface which helps hold the fillings of the mattress in place and is very comfortable to sleep on. The mattress borders has 2 rows of side stitching to help hold all the springs in place, it also includes handles for turning the mattress and vents to help the mattress breathe.

A standard 4FT 6 Double will retail for around £350 which makes it a good price point for a pocket sprung bed. If budget allows the Echo is a good upgrade offering more springs and ultimately more support but the Symphony holds its own in this category.

Over the years when it’s come round to replacing my bed I’ve found myself opting for a slightly firmer feel bed than the one before.

I don’t know if this is because my posture has slowly worsened as the years go by or because them Friday night Chinese takeaways have finally caught up with me and I’m not the slim youth I though I was!

Either way i was pleased to see a range of beds from Airsprung that cater for the firmer feel end of the market.

I usually budget myself to around £350 for a 4FT 6 double bed as I like to try get the better spring system in the range which is usually a pocket spring.

I like pocket springs because sleeping with my partner allows us both to get the right support for our body weight and with me been not the stillest of sleepers it means my partner isn’t waking up every 20 minutes as the whole mattress doesn’t follow my every movement.

So with these parameters on board I opted for the Ortho Pocket 1200. This bed offers 1200 pocket springs within the mattress with a layer of fillings offering less surface give. The mattress has a hand tufted finish which I feel gives a better comfort feel when lying on it and I even opted for a platform top divan base over a sprung edge which makes the mattress even move firmer due to the less give in the base.

This bed retails for just over £300 which i find is very competitive price for a pocket sprung bed. This model also gives you the option of storage drawers. I opted for 2 drawers as I always find its good to have somewhere to store extra duvets and pillow cases etc.

All in all I was very happy with my purchase. I have found Airsprung to be a reliable manufacturer of beds over the years and have yet to find a comparable manufacturer that can deliver the same quality at the same price.
